Twilight Series

Last night I saw Beirut over to the Pioneer Park, and let me say it was quite wonderful. Last weeks Girl Talk fiasco (me in the front row being smashed, molested, soaked) was a little too much to handle, so this week I stayed a ways back from the stage and just relaxed, danced and sang along to the music.

There is no better place to people watch than at these free Twilight oncerts (every Thursday night through Aug. 26th). The crowd is mostly hipster (rolled up skinny jeans or jorts, tom's shoes, tank tops, occipital-warming beanies, lens-less glasses) in nature with the occasional genuine hippie (bra-less, dreadlocked, dirty, smelly, shoes optional).

South Park's "Aging hippie liberal douche"

My favorite person to watch at these concerts, however, is actually the normal-looking dude bro who has never even heard of (insert underground indie buzzband).* Looking very uncomfortable, he awkwardly stands in his douchebag way, chest pushed out, arms folded, trucker hat cocked to one side, completely alienated. The hipsters would rather die a thousand deaths than be seen associating with a guy wearing Volcom (like, whatthef__? why is he here ruining our chill alt vibe?* why doesn't he go to a yellowcard concert or something?) and the dude bro would rather gouge his eyes out than abide the ripe stench of a tree-hugging rasta-hippie (shit man! that granola chick stinks! and she's got hairy legs!).

I nearly forgot to mention the other good thing about these concerts, the contact high.

Summer Flu

So I'm at home, sick with the flu. It seems to be a particularly bad bout of it since it's been over two years since I last had one. Feverish, dizzy, nauseous, achy, all the classic symptoms, I have 'em. I'm pretty sure I contracted this flu whilst on my travels in Europe. I was in several crowded planes, airports, and tourist sites, any of which could be the culprit. Come to think of it, I did stay in a hostel in London, above a Pub. It appeared fairly clean but I wonder if they wash their sheets. I won't go into too much detail, since Dave is planning a post on all of the particulars. I will, however, recommend to NEVER fly stand-by. It was an absolutely miserable experience trying for 8+ flights in one day. So, I believe the stress of trying to get on multiple flights plus the volumes of people everywhere plus my lack of quality sleep added up to this flu (we ended up flying to Sacramento, renting a car there, then driving overnight to SLC, just in time to go to work Monday morning). I hate summer flu.

First Inaugural Post

Now before any reader gets the bright idea to correct my title, please note that it was an intended redundancy. As this blog will mostly serve the purpose of making fun of things in my life, I feel it most appropriate to start off on that foot.

Other than being the birthplace of such famous persons as the voice of Scooby Doo, Scott Innes, Designing Women producer Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, and NCAA basketball star (and certainly future NBA superstar) Tyler Hansborough, my beautiful hometown of Poplar Bluff, Missouri is probably best known for its high per capita level of education. Poplar Bluff High School and the more prestigious Three Rivers Community College exemplify the high quality of academic scholarship found in southeastern Missouri.

Back to this post's title, First Inaugural Post. My senior year of high school brought an unexpected surprise, the addition of a swim team. Our shirts that year said "First Inaugural Season." Needless to say, I had some catching up to do when I went off to college.
